OSK Parent & Player Code of Conduct

Ocean State Kraken Parent/ Guardian & Player Code of Conduct

The Ocean State Kraken is committed to the notion that Basketball is more than just a game; it is a conduit for imparting valuable life lessons. Our mission is to nurture the development of positive, character-building attributes in our Athletes by promoting principles of good sportsmanship, self-respect, respect for others, and accountability for one's actions.

To align with the program's philosophy and to aid our coaches in imparting these lessons, the engagement and support of the parents and guardians are essential. We have established a set of standards and expectations for the parents and guardians of all participants within the OSK program. While these guidelines may appear intuitive, we take pride in the reputation of our program, its athletes and their biggest supporters.

1. All players and parents are expected to display a level of respect towards all OSK staff, coaches, league officials, and opposing teams. This includes refraining from engaging with players, coaches, and officials during practice and games, allowing for the coaches to fulfill their coaching responsibilities.

2. All players are expected to arrive to games and practices on time. On time means arriving to practice 10-15 minutes early to change, stretch, and prepare for the start of practice at the designated time. On time for games is to be no later than 30 minutes prior to the designated scheduled time. AAU games will sometimes commence early in an effort to keep the tournament on schedule. This also reinforces the important life skill - being on time. Remember, early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.

3. Respect: Parents, guardians and players are expected to display a level of respect towards everyone they encounter when representing the OSK. At OSK we have a zero tolerance policy for negative behavior, bullying, and harassment. All are expected to refrain from yelling negative comments at opposing players, officials, parents, or teammates at all times. Positive reinforcement, cheering, and encouragement are always welcomed! We aim to lead by example, and set the standard for sportsmanship even when other teams have displayed unsportsmanlike conduct. In the face of adversity, we choose grace over malice.

4. While the thrill of victory is a worthy pursuit, our primary mission remains to savor the joy of the game and to grow as athletes, both in skill and spirit, both on and off the court. Remember that every setback is a setup for a comeback. Defeat teaches us lessons that victory never could. Win or lose, there is always a positive.

5. It is crucial for parents and guardians to echo the coach's message and support their guidance. When parents contradict a coach, it can create confusion and undermine the athlete's trust in the coach's expertise. This discord can hinder a player's development and success, as it splits their focus and can lead to mixed messages about goals, techniques, and values. A unified front between parents and coaches not only strengthens the coach's authority but also fosters a cohesive environment conductive to the athlete's growth and love of the game.

6. Intermission for Reflection: Should you feel the need to talk to a coach or OSK staff member regarding any issue or concern you may have, we ask that you write it down, and allow for cooler heads to prevail. At OSK, we call this "Intermission for Reflection". This is a 24 hour period for you to collect and organize your thoughts prior to bringing your concern to the attention of a coach or OSK staff member.

7. At Ocean State Kraken, we kindly request that as a parent or guardian, you contribute to creating a positive experience for your child, fellow players, families, and coaches. Remember, we at OSK are more than just a team; we’re an extended family united by our love for the game!
